Jacques Damour

Jacques Damour is a working-class Republican in Paris. He takes part in the Commune of 1871 but escapes death and is exiled to New Caledonia in the South Pacific. After escaping, he is mistakenly declared dead and he spends 10 years attempting, unsuccessfully, to make his fortune in the United States. He then returns to France to find his wife and daughter.
